OpenVPN Settings - VPN Protocol 'Select the VPN Protocol'

Post by jack0w » Fri Jul 12, 2013 5:32 pm

Hi there

Could anybody explain to me what the 'VPN Protocol' option in OpenVPN Settings does? The options I see are TCP, UDP and Adaptive. I've not been able to find any documentation that explains what effect this setting has. I only ask as I have two OpenVPN servers to connect to, one running on a TCP port, and another on a UDP port.

I am thinking I should probably set this to adaptive, and the appropriate setting will be determined on each occasion I connect to a VPN. However I'm not completely sure if I'm correct!

Any pointers would be much appreciated :)

Thanks in advance.

This should normally be set to Adaptive. That means it will try to connect by UDP first then TCP (if UDP fails).

Some people might want to force connections to always use either UDP or TCP. This option is for them.
