Connecting to VPN remotely requires the public IP address...

I have a FQDN pointing to my home IP address. But when I attempt to connect OpenVPN using that FQDN, I get the following message.
What I don't understand is that the DNS is obviously able to provide the proper IP address for the FQDN. So why can't OpenVP use that info?
TIA!
However, if I ping the FQDN, I DO get a reply which tells me the IP address. I can then have OpenVPN make the connection using that IP address.Sat Jun 22 10:01:45 2013 RESOLVE: Cannot resolve host address: RasPiHomeNAS.donireland.com: The requested name is valid, but no data of the requested type was found.
