Open access server - erratic behaviour with Windows 8 client

Hi
I can connect OK with Android and Win 7, but windows 8 seems to be unreliable.
Android connects pretty much instantly, but windows 8 takes longer - between 30 seconds and a minute or two. It seems that when it takes a longer time, the "obtaining an ip address phase" takes longer than usual and I get a dud connection
When I get a dud connection I can't access devices on the lan
I have seen a suggestion that I should Turn On 'RAS Connection Manager Administration Kit' - but there is no such option in my installation.
I am using the basic version of windows 8 - maybe I need the Pro version?
Any advise would be appreciated.
