Proxy / Client Certificates on Client Website

Hi,
I was wondering, does anyone know if it is possible to secure the client portion of the website with client based certificate authentication through the web browser (such as with apache). I've tried proxying the connection through apache (with client certification auth) but have had issues with the session when connecting.

The only reason I'd like to do this is because (from my current experience) the connect client stops working when the client side website is behind a firewall, and so, I have to leave the client side website open to the Internet. If I'm wrong about that, please let me know.


Any ideas?
