VPN impact on actual traffic usage!

I've been using vpn services for a while and i always been noticing something that I'm not sure if it's correct or not?
I found out that the actual traffic used by applications is no more than 80-85% of the traffic used without VPN. ie, speed will drop 80-85%.
And what i mean by application is the actual bandwidth used by the program it self, not the one running through the ethernet.
I noticed this first when i played streamed videos that had a bitrate close to my max speed.
Without VPN i can play the video smoothly without any lag, but with VPN running i found out that the video lags a lot even though my bandwidth monitor software shows that I'm running at maximum speed.
I did some tests by downloading 100MB file and measure bandwidth running through the ethernet and it shows about 118.3MB downloaded, while without vpn it only consumed 101.6MB!
For torrents the loss was more than this!
So what is this 15-20% bandwidth used for?
Is this the consequence of using VPN service or I'm i having something wrong?
