Able to to ping through to private network without tunnel

Hello,
I'm scratching my head at still being able to ping through to my private network (latest access server d/l) without a tunnel being active.
If I stop the VPN service, the pings stop, so obviously it is the VPN service that is routing through to NIC of the other host inside private LAN.
Interestingly, where I can ping through to the NIC on the other private host (VPN service running, but no active tunnel)... the second (private) NIC on the VPN AS box isn't pingable - which is as expected.
You guys have any ideas ?
Much appreciation in advance,
BP
