Ok, I have been trying to use a dd-wrt wireguard server with a dd-wrt client that I can use overseas. so far, no success after hundreds of hours of trying. Some more exploration to do based on the new info. thanks a lot again.

It is not impossible, but the situation is that dd-wrt devs are still trying to understand wireguard, your setup may require more changes with the constantly changing web UI for wireguard on dd-wrt.
