Understanding VPN (OpenVpn)

Post by beenee7 » Wed Jun 05, 2019 8:22 am

Hi guys (and gals),
I'm a noob trying to understand one thing.

I was always convinced (and once learned) that a VPN connection cannot connect to the VPN host if its within the VPN's IP range (Hence in the same network). I do seem to remember that in previous installs I always needed to logoff the 'actual' network (beeing on site testing) and connect to a mobile hotspot or alike to test the VPN connection.

How come that this works now with my latest installs ((Win7) OpenVPN client -> Synology VPN Server)...? I am connected to the local ethernet and can connect via OpenVPN Client beeing in the same network!

I'm puzzled, whats the reason for this (or was I always on the wrong track?) :geek:
Thanks,
Steve

You were always on the wrong track.

There are some circumstances where it is simply easier to ask a user to try from another location.
If the configuration looks good but they cannot connect from their home LAN then, without changing
anything, we simply ask that they try from a remote location and then the VPN works.
