Using OpenVPN instead Teamviewer

Post by topeter » Wed Mar 11, 2020 1:52 pm

Windows 10 op system
Is it possible to use OpenVPN community (non commercial version) as remote desktop solution?
Which components are required to install on my computer and remote computer?
(I guess no server is required, which is commercial)

Possibly some remote computers may still have Win 7 installed.

There are some issues why Teamviewer isn't suitable.
Like access to remote network devices without interrupting remote desktop screen session.

Yes it's possible. Here is my setup:

- OpenVPN on my router with Tomato firmware (as the server).
- Remote Desktop running on my desktop on the LAN.
- Firewall on the router does not forward RDP port (so RDP is not accessible directly through the router from the internet).
- I run the OpenVPN community client when outside to get an IP on the LAN.
- Run Remote Desktop and connect as if I was on the network.
