Extreme Slow Speed

Post by deltav » Tue Sep 17, 2019 9:16 am

Hi Guys,

I hope you can help me in getting the most out of this good software as I am relatively new to OpenVPN.

I'll try to keep it as simple as it gets.

I use to connect to my home network via OpenVPN to a TPLink VR2800 Router via cellular network from my Android Phone, but I get extremely slow up\down speeds.

Home ADSL speed is 7Mbps down and 1Mbps up maximum (no fiber cable yet to date in the area...)

Average cellular network speed I use to have when I lock OpenVPN connection is 48Mbps down and 20Mbps up.

The final maximum tunnel speed I get once the tunnel is on is 643kbps down and 228kpbs up.

Ok I know that my home ADSL speed is not that high and that I could not reach the full home band anyway, but I think the final tunnel speed is way too far from my home baseline ADSL speed to explain that difference as a standard data recoding vpn driven issue.

So the question is whether there's something on configuration side that I can tweak with in order to get the most out of my yet low performing home ADSL line when in VPN.

I've looked at several posts over the internet, but nothing I have found has been of help so far (port change, switching udp\tcp, sndbuf\rcvbuf tweaking, etc...).

Additional challenge is that my router does not allow much configuration items. I can only change port number (whithin a 1024-65534 range (no 443 port option available)) and connection type between udp and tcp. So the only changes I made were on client side on mu phone.

Any help from your side would be very much appreciated...

your upload speed is 1Mbps up maximum so how fast can you expect from openvpn client ? your openvpn android connect at 643kbps is better now , if you want faster you need buy more upload speed from your ISP or sign up to a VPN service

1st. My area is not provided with fiber cable but ADSL only. That's why my line can't go any faster and that's why I am trying to understand whether there's some configuration stuff I can play with to get the most out of that poor ADSL I have.

2nd. It just sounded strange to me that openvpn "eats" almost five sixths of the full, even poor, upload speed to get to its final operating speed, but as I said I am a total newbie with OpenVPN and so therefore this might be normal.

3rd. Thanks for your reply. :)
