One OpenVPN success, one failure... help

Post by raylo32 » Sun Dec 23, 2018 3:11 am

I have successfully set up OpenVpn server on my home network from a Linksys 1900ACS router and have working clients on my iPhone and Windows laptop. Now I am trying to duplicate this for a friend's system with a Linksys 3200ACM with connections to my same phone and laptop. No joy. I have turned on the VPN in the Linksys admin settings, setup the user/password, and downloaded the config files just like before.

iPhone problem: Importing the profile via e-mail and OpenVPN client app fails due to "remote option not specified." Can't even try to actually connect.

Laptop problem: config file imports OK, but connection (from outside the local network) fails, full log reads: Sat Dec 22 21:57:11 2018 disabling NCP mode (--ncp-disable) because not in P2MP client or server mode
Options error: You must define TUN/TAP device (--dev)
Use --help for more information.

Only difference here is that there is an Ooma Telo VoIP box in between the modem and router. Could this be causing these particular issues? I will try to switch the Ooma box to be behind the router tomorrow to test that theory.

I just took a look at the config file from the failed setup with the 3200ACM and they look nothing like the ones for the successful setup on the 1900ACS. Haven't tried relocating the Ooma box yet....

Config file created by the 3200ACM and imported to the laptop, it is basically empty. No wonder it doesn't work.

I found a thread on the Linksys community forums that shows this may be a defect in the router, the may be corrected by a factory reset. I'll give it a try. Looks like I am already on current (only) firmware.

So far no joy. PC tries to connect but ends in "waiting" state. iPhone tries to connect but log says "server poll timeout".

What you describe sounds like a typical "TLS Error: TLS key negotiation failed to occur within 60 seconds" ..

This may help:

Hey Tin Can, I am a little embarrassed. Apparently after doing a factory reset on the router that somehow enabled the VPN server I neglected to actually turn it back on. It's working now. Now I need to get the remote desktop working to the server but of course it is Windows 10 Home, so I will need to upgrade that. This is a lot of work and expense just to be able to remote in to help family with their PC and printer issues.
