Internal DNS resolution not working for me

iOS 12.01 with open vpn 3.0.2

I am able to establish a vpn connection to my network, but it doesn't appear I'm getting the dns servers from my network for resolution or it's not being honored. I can connect to assets by local ip over the vpn but not domain or host name.

When I attempt to ping these devices by fqdn, they resolve to external ip, not the private ip that is listed in the local dns.

I'm using a Watchguard firewall to establish SSL vpn connections from clients. Android phones appear to work as expected but not iOS devices. Also windows devices obtain and use the proper local dns when connecting over vpn. However those use a different vpn client.

Is there a way to verify what DNS servers I am getting when connected w/ open vpn connect from the iphones?

Any other suggestions to troubleshoot?
