basic settings for openvpn on amazon aws

Post by pmdegoede » Wed Oct 10, 2012 11:14 am

Hi,

I installed the open vpn access server using the ami and instructions without any problem.

I can connect to the openvpn server however I can't connect to any of the other ec2 instances in the same region. I have made sure they are all in the same zone and I'm uising the AWS internal IP address.

I assumed this would work straight away - any configuration I'm missing?

I'm in exactly the same boat. I am trying to set up a VPN connection to a Windows 2008 EC2 instance. I tried a gazillion ways to connect via VPN directly to the Win2008 instance and failed. I then tried to create an OpenVPN instance in the same VPC using the canned ami-31d21358 as instructed (http://openvpn.net/index.php/access-ser ... r-ami.html). Everything seemed to go ok. I created the OpenVPN instance in the same VPC, browsed to the web interface and found the OpenVPN web interface, downloaded and installed the client software and then connected successfully via OpenVPN to the OpenVPN server instance. Using ipconfig on my Win7 client I can see my assigned OpenVPN IP address. What I can't do is see or connect to the Win2008 server which is supposed to be on the same sub-net. As far as I know I have opened up all the necessary ports via appropriate security groups.

Question:
1) If I am trying to connect to other instances on the same VPC should I set up my OpenVPN server as an ethernet bridge or for NAT translation? I have set it up as NAT (Default)
2) If I set up my Amazon VPC in the subnet 10.0.0.0/24 and then configure my OpenVPN client IP addresses also in the same 10.0.0.0/24 sub-net, are these sub-nets one and the same or are they two unrelated private sub-nets that can't talk to each other.

Any help greatly appreciated.

One further comment. I am from the Windows world and know zero about working in Linux / Unix. So if you are recommending actions that go beyond the OpenVPN web admin tool, pls be gentle.

I'm in the same boat. I am trying the Layer 3 mode, but still no luck.
