How to Hire For OpenVPN install on VPS?

Post by whenindoubt » Fri Oct 07, 2011 5:35 pm

Not sure if this is an appropriate place so please correct me if I'm wrong.

I wanted to know how I should/could go about hiring someone to install OpenVPN on a VPS. I might be able to handle a basic install through tutorials but there are a couple customizations I just wouldn't have a clue about (not to mention I wouldn't really have a clue what I was doing).

Regarding the customizations, first I would need to be able to connect to the VPN directly through my router. Second I'd need to be able to connect through a non-standard VPN port. Thirdly, I'd need to make sure my connection wouldn't revert to my normal IP in case of disconnect.

That's pretty much it. Just curious how to go about hiring someone and what kind of price should I be paying.

Thanks for any help!

I've been there before :( Faced with the daunting prospect of Linux + OpenVPN for the first time. Now in hindsight, I think the problem was not being familiar enough with the Linux command line. Anyways, to answer you questions...

I think here in the forum, or the OpenVPN IRC channel, ... or some site such as freelancer.com will be your best sources for OpenVPN experts willing to take on the task for you.

I'm all for sharing knowledge openly, so if you can bare to move at thread speed (post, wait, reply, wait, post), then I can take you through some steps. If you want instant and fast help, check the OpenVPN IRC.

If you have a DD-WRT or some router that can install OpenVPN then this will be configurable from your end. If you want to pay someone to do it, you'll at least need to allow remote access for the technician (who ever takes on your job) to log in.

Not a problem. Everyone who installs OpenVPN will know how to do this.

Usually also not a problem for expert OpenVPN installers.

For *all* of the above (and then no support later).. you'd be maybe looking at $50 to $200 at freelancer.com (just a rough guess, honestly I don't know).

Do some thorough background checks or make sure the person is trust-worthy because they will need to be given root access to your server.
The cure for boredom is curiosity
