I’ve noticed an issue today.
I’m using an iPad and when I’m connected through a shared connection from my iPhone, impossible to initialize any connection. It stops and popup the following message : "network is unavailable, please try to connect later with active network". Nothing in the logs also obviously.
It seems that the app (3.4.1) is unable to detect active network with a shared connection. Anyone ever experienced this ?

Re: Unable to connect through shared connection
I have the same issue. I use my ipad connected via hotspot to my iphone. When i try to make a vpn connction on my ipad it fails. Ihave the latest version of openvpn 4.3.1 installed on my ipad. Before upgrade in November this still worked. And has always worked for many years before.
Strangely when i adctivate vpn via ios settings menu vpn option toggle switch, the vpn connection does work. So this looks like a bug in openvpn since recently.
Same profile in openvpn on my iphone works without problems.
I am running latest version of ios.

Same issue here, I've reported it via https://support.openvpn.com, workaround works as you identified - thanks!
Suspect it's the GUI not believing there is an active network connection and restricting the process from starting for user simplicity - however in this instance the detection logic is wrong. iOS Settings does not perform this check and would let you enable it even with no Internet connectivity (which would then lead to users asking why their connections are timing out etc).

Re: Unable to connect through shared connection
Hey there,
It's super frustrating when your iPhone or iPad can't connect to Wi-Fi! Let's see if we can get you back online.
First, try the simple stuff. Restart your iPhone or iPad. Sometimes a quick reboot can clear up minor glitches. Also, make sure your Wi-Fi router is turned on and that you're entering the correct password.
If that doesn't work, try forgetting the network and then rejoining it. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi, tap on your network name, and then tap "Forget This Network." Then, try connecting again.
As a last resort, you can try resetting your network settings. This will erase all your Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth connections, so make sure to write them down if you need them! Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
If you have problem persist after trying these solution, you can follow for more details assistance below.
