Windows Server 2008 network location/firewall issue

Post by Sarnikorpi » Tue May 03, 2011 8:01 am

Hello all,

I would like to share files via OpenVPN. Connection between server and client is configured and as far as I know it is working fine (btw. thank you for great How-To documentation!).

But Windows firewall is blockin file sharing. Network connection created by OpenVPN is marked as "Unidentified network". Problem is that I can not change network location (location is "public" which, of course, disallows file sharing).

After some googling, I did found work-around to change local policies (run->mmc->Local Policy->Computer Configuration->...->Network List Manager Policies). I changed User permissions of Unidentified network ("user can change location") and rebooted the server. But still I can not change location...

So, how I could allow file sharing for OpenVPN connections?
Should I add firewall rule to all network types which allows file sharing for connection coming from 10.8.0.x?

OS: Windows Web Server 2008 R2

if the VPN is working fine (can the VPN client the VPN server and vice versa?) then it's pretty much off-topic for this forum. Changing the network location is not something that OpenVPN (currently) can do for you. Try searching the web, e.g.

Hello janjust,

Yes VPN is working fine. I was hoping someone here had faced and (maybe) solved same issue...

I am sorry for off-topic
