Split VPN on MacOS using OpenVPN server and Tunnelblick client

Post by funwisely » Tue May 16, 2023 1:18 pm

Hi all,

I have Tunnelblick VPN client on MacOS which is using OpenVPN client config file .ovpn file to connect to OpenVPN server and running fine. I would like to send only specific traffics through VPN connections while rest of the traffic through normal internet connection, while VPN is connected. I don't want to connect and reconnect frequently to use organization email. Email and Office 365 traffic should go through OpenVPN while rest of traffic like YouTube, FB, etc. (heavy, unsecured traffic should use home network to save bandwidth). Please suggest/advice/guide how to achieve that. Thanks!

Hello funwisely,

OpenVPN Connect v3 uses the OpenVPN3 library that supports split-DNS. OpenVPN2 that is used in Tunnelblick currently does not as far as I'm aware. So the answer would be to use OpenVPN Connect v3.

I do have information to believe that split-DNS is coming to OpenVPN2 but it's not there yet.

Kind regards,
Johan
