OpenVPN GUI (Windows) does not auto reconnect after Internet dropout

Post by JNavas » Wed Mar 25, 2020 8:58 pm

I'm currently using Surfshark, but this may apply to any OpenVPN provider.

I'm stuck with an underlying Wi-Fi connection that drops and reconnects from time to time.
Unfortunately, OpenVPN GUI was not automatically recovering when that happened.
Instead, it just sat there indefinitely with a dead VPN connection.
Each time I had to manually disconnect and reconnect to recover.

Research of the problem suggests the cause is the persist-tun option
in my client config from my VPN provider (Surfshark).
I disabled persist-tun, and that seems to have solved my problem—
OpenVPN GUI now reconnects automatically after an Internet dropout and recovery.

Does this seem like a reasonable fix? Thanks.

OpenVPN GUI v11.14.0.0
OS Name Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro
Version 6.3.9600 Build 9600
System Type x64-based PC
