Save JUST username, for auth-user-pass

Post by pbrown » Tue Aug 20, 2019 6:21 pm

I've done some googling, and turned up that you can specify a filename, in your
config.ovpn
file. so that
auth-user-pass mycreds.txt

will let you put in your username and password, into mycreds.txt.
But I dont want my password laying around in a file.
What are my options if I want openvpn to just remember my username, but still prompt me for password?

What is your problem? yes, mswindows uses .ovpn files. SO DOES LINUX. you can invoke openvpn with
"openvpn configfile.ovpn". And thats what my IT guy sent me when I asked for VPN access.

no, it doesnt HAVE to be called .ovpn, but any sane person will recognize that standards are a good idea. Just like you dont HAVE to name a jpeg file ".jpg" under linux.. but SANE people do anyway.

So meanwhile.. is there any sane person out there who might respond to my question, please?

I already pointed out *exactly* what I*'m using. the openvpn command line tool.
I gave an exact example in my prior post.
"openvpn configfile.ovpn".
If there isnt a way to do it, or if you just dont KNOW of a way to do it, then let other people have a chance to respond, instead of being an ass about it and abusing your apparent moderator privileges to blackhole my post.

I did some more digging.
Apparently, the official way is that people still have to create the file.. but leave the second line blank, instead of putting an actual password there.
Fairly straightforward. And presumably standard, across platforms.

Posting this for the benefit of google searches, since there doesnt seem to be good google hits on this info.

Next time a new user asks a basic question, try to be actually helpful, instead of being an ass about what platform they are using, "tincantech"
