Changing location of statuslog

I want to change the location of the status log as having it under /etc/openvpn doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
I added the following to my server.conf:
status /var/log/openvpn-status.log
While it creates the status file in /var/lg as expected it also still creates one under /etc/openvpn. Why is this? How can I stop it from doing so?
