bridge at server and at client side

Hi Everyone,

I am building a demo which should simulate 2 locations. When configuring it, i came across a problem which hasn't been solved yet.

simply said is my setup as followed:
site A site B
pc - switch - openvpn server - openvpn client - switch - pc
between the server and the client is a switch that only monitors the traffic.
both the server as the client have 2 physical NIC's
servers run Ubuntu 18.04 with openvpn 2.4.4 x86_64-pc-linux-gnu

between the switch and the server and the switch and client are bridges.

the tunnel works as it should, except that is doesn't seem to carry any traffic. when i do a simple ICMP request to the other site, it ignores the tunnel and goes directly to the other site, except that it is unable to reach the pc.

Is there something obvious that i missed here? I have been browsing around for the past 2 days, but there is not a case that uses the same setup.
