SSH port forward of OpenVPN server port

goal: hide an openvpn server behind a vps so that we can connect to our remote LAN without disclosing its location through metadata
i set up the openvpn server successfully but simply port forwarding the ovpn port to the vps and changing the client config to point to the vps public ip gives the following error:
SIGUSR1 connection failed
has anybody set this up successfully before? if yes how?
