[Error] Installing OpenVPN: querying 'netCfgInstanceId' registry value failed

Post by AlexTransfer » Thu Nov 05, 2020 2:43 pm

Hello guys and gals,

I'm having trouble installing OpenVPN GUI at home. When I'm trying to install it gets stuck at around 50%, stays there for around 10 minutes and then shows me this error message:
OpenVPNMSICA: get_net_adapter_guid: querying 'netCfgInstanceId' registry value failed. Error 2: Can't find the file.
Image

I have Windows 10 Pro / v2004 . My colleague who has the same OS version doesn't get that error message.

Does anyone have an idea what's the reason behind this and what I could do to fix that?
I tried to google as much as I could but it seems nobody ever had the same error before me.
It looks like some registry value is missing somewhere, so maybe I could just go and create a DWORD somewhere and it will magically start to work.

Best regards,
Alex

PS: I've read everything regarding installation here https://openvpn.net/community-resources/how-to/ and there is nothing that would help me with my problem. There Isn't really much there except "Download and Install" and 99% of the article is a configuration-howto. I'm not there yet because it won't install at all.

This is the first report of such an issue so I raised a ticket here:
https://github.com/OpenVPN/openvpn-build/issues/200

Hopefully, somebody will know what the missing file is ..

TinCanTech,
thanks for reposting it to the GitHub, but the only thing I have is the Windows Defender that can't even be disabled. The problem's origin must be something else. I am logging in as Admin and must have all the rights I need.
If I knew what registry key is being looked up I could at least look it up myself and see if it's there of not.

Hi, I really appreciate OpenVPN, it's a great tool and I used it for years (and still do).

I never had problems with it so far, however, at the moment I can't install it due to the same error as mentioned in this thread.

The installation hangs during the creation of the tap adapter (tun is already visible) and then u wait a long time until this error appears.

Sometimes, the error also is displayed right when the installation starts (I tried it multiple times).

Maybe it has something to do with a parallel wireguard installation, I started using that a while ago (about the same time).

Another reason could be a recent windows update, I recently did a clean install of win 10 build 20h2

Update: I figured out that the Comodo Firewall Driver was the problem on my side.

I did the following to fix it:

1) Export Comodo Firewall Configuration
2) Uninstall Comodo
3) Reboot
4) Install OpenVPN or other apps with TAP adapters
5) Reboot (not sure if necessary)
6) Reinstall Comodo Firewall and import config
