Adapter Speed

Post by gizme » Fri Sep 03, 2010 10:41 pm

Iam using a simple setup with openvpn with a Linux server and a Windows 2003 server and both
are on 100mbit lines.

The tap adapter on the win2k3 server is set on 10mbit and was wondering if its possible to get it to 100mbit.

I do not use windows, but I bet this is a display issue.
Try running openvpn on 2 windows machines in the same LAN, then transfer a file from 1 to the other. I bet it goes faster than 10mbit

This is simply a cosmetic issue with the Windows Driver. Your speeds can go above 10mbit/s!

Then why can't I get speeds above 10 mbits as well and all the other people on the internet that can't either. I've been googling this problem it is not merely cosmetic. I've have tested speeds and am looking for a fix. I have a 40mbit a sec. connection I do a speed test without openvpn on speed test servers all over the country and get between 30 to 40mbits downstream. With open vpn I get around 12 max that is because the 10mbit limit is not exact it will only be around 10mbit max. With My step dads computer it is the same. Tap Win32 needs to be rewritten to connect faster. Maybe in linux it is cosmetic but in windows It is its max. I see others saying it is cosmetic I think your being lied to, to protect openvpn from this deficiancy. Don't always believe what your superiors tell you. Let them know this is a problem that needs addressed. Now I have read that people on lans dont't seem to have problems but others mostly seem to have this issue when connecting to the internet. Why would you need a vpn on a lan anyway? In most cases at least. Yeah I need a secure tunnel from my bedroom to the living room wired. Doh! And I've seen don't mind the man behind the curtain or that number doesn't mean anything well something is wrong and coincidently I just happen to max out around this number 1+1=2. Maybe it's not the problem but logically it appears to be. Open vpn maxes out at only 13% of proccessor when recieving data average about 5%. Don't tell me to just disregard the number the proof is in the pudding below. So much pudding oh sweet pudding. I'm going to post this on every forum I can find about open vpn Fix it damnit.

Excuse me?
OpenVPN is an open source project, developed and supported by volunteers. If you don't like it , use something else. You have no right to demand that we fix stuff.

For the record: the up and download speeds of my win7 64bit box running OpenVPN 2.1.4 are
* up: 46 Mbps
* down: 75 Mbps

this was done on a windows 7 laptop with a very plain configuration file, i.e. no fragment/tun-mtu tweaks.
