packet HMAC authentication failed

Post by mikekehrli » Thu May 17, 2018 8:52 pm

I'm continually getting the same error on all connection attempts to my server. I'm running the server on a Raspberry PI and I used the PiVPN script here: https://install.pivpn.io

The server seems to be working correctly. I see the port being used by the openvpn process. I'm using the custom port number 51194. My router is port forwarding 51194 to my server. Also note, I'm forwarding about 10 other services to this server without issue.

I've tried connecting with 2 different android clients and from the windows client. I always get the same result. The server logs each connection attempt as a tls error. Note that all 3 were using the same .ovpn file which is copied below.

My /etc/openvpn/server.conf file is as follows:
Server Config
dev tun
proto udp

ca /etc/openvpn/easy-rsa/pki/ca.crt
cert /etc/openvpn/easy-rsa/pki/issued/server_AWzDWk7uLN83hq9b.crt

I'm using a .ovpn file to access the server from the remote clients. The client.ovpn file follows. Note, I've obscured the dns name and the certs.

Finally, the server's log file, openvpn.log. I've cut out everthing except the startup logging, and one of the errors that gets logged every time a client tries to connect. See the last 2 lines for the example of the connection error:

So, far, I've not been able to debug the error from my google searches and searches on this forum. Can anyone see what I've missed?
