Configuring OpenVPN just as an internet relay on Windows Server 2008

Post by NFH5 » Wed Aug 30, 2017 6:22 pm

I have a 1Gbps internet connection at home in the UK, and I sometimes travel to countries where the internet is heavily filtered. I therefore want to install OpenVPN on my server at home, which runs Window Server 2008 (not R2), just for remotely accessing the internet via my home connection. I don't need remote access to my LAN. I already have various remote services configured on my server, so I'm very familiar with configuring port forwarding etc.

I have some questions:
  1. Are there any simple guides on how to configure what I need?
  2. Do I have to use OpenVPN client software, either on my Windows laptop or on my iPhone, or can I just use each operating system's built-in VPN client?
  3. Do I need a licence for multiple users? It seems that the Windows version of OpenVPN doesn't need a licence, but I'm not sure.
