CreateFile failed on TAP device

Post by givecake » Fri Apr 07, 2017 8:24 am

Hi all,

Trying to get OpenVPN working on a Freenas box, but getting the errors in the attached file:

CreateFile failed on TAP device: \\.\Global\{DDD4E89A-F0CB-40D7-B798-11B1102AC436}.tap
All TAP-Windows adapters on this system are currently in use.
Exiting due to fatal error.

Details:

Connecting operating system: Windows XP with Routing and Remote Access service disabled.
ExpressVPN also on the system, but with the adapter disabled and all openvpn processes killed.

The OpenVPN works when connecting from an Android phone, almost instantly. I don't know how to check file shares and things on there though, so I can't really test it to any effect. I have also tested it on a Windows 7 machine, and get similar problems. That Win7 machine also has ExpressVPN installed.

Do I need to uninstall ExpressVPN to get the Freenas connection running properly?

You can add another Tap Adaptor :

# Start Menu > Tap Windows > Utilities ..

I have the same problem but when I try to add a new TAP device the add fails. During the initial install the installer adds the first TAP device and there is no other use for.

I successfully added a 2nd TAP connector and renamed it TAP 2. But it seems to be ignored by start up and still reports
All TAP-Windows adapters on this system are currently in use.

I am making progress I can now get the server up. I actually got a remote client connected to the server with assigned ip 10.0.8.1 255.255.255.0. which is expected since
server.ovpn has the following line:
server 10.0.8.0 255.255.255.0
but can't go anywhere as there is no route from 10.0.8.0 to the net where the vpn server resides 192.168.3.0. I can't find any explanation of how that part works or how or where to define a route. External clients need to access servers at 192.168.3.26 and 192.168.3.99. The openvpn server is at 192.168.3.2.
