Can't Access Windows 10 Folder Shares

Post by widgetkid » Fri Dec 31, 2021 3:11 am

I am an OpenVPN noob, so please forgive my stupidity. :D

I am attempting to use OpenVPN Cloud to securely get access to files shared on my mother's remote computer.

I have installed OpenVPN on both my computer and her computer. I'm logged in as me on my OpenVPN Connect client. I created a user account for her and logged into it with her computer. Both computers appear to be successfully connected to OpenVPN Cloud.

When I try to access a folder share like I would if the computers were on the same physical network, I get a Network error:
Windows cannot access \\MOM-DESKTOP\Users\

The same thing occurs when I try using the public IP address shown in OpenVPN Connect:
Windows cannot access \\73.94.48.252\Users\

Finally, I tried simply pinging the server in the Command Prompt, and 4 pings went through just fine.

I'm stumped and hoping someone has figured this out already. TIA!

Windows cannot access \\MOM-DESKTOP\Users\
Because MOM-DESKTOP does not resolve because you do not a a name service installed (Like WINS).

Windows cannot access \\73.94.48.252\Users\
Because that is a public IP address not a computer.

Try the VPN IP (10.8.0.x) of the remote PC.
