new Macbook Pro M1, won't connect

Post by bazyar » Wed Feb 24, 2021 7:12 pm

Hi,

I just got a new Macbook Pro M1.
The openvpn client and settings seemed to copy over okay using Migration Assistant from my old MacBook Pro (2013).

But it wouldn't connect.
So I uninstalled and reinstalled OpenVPN Connect, and reimported config and cert, and it still won't connect. (Still works fine on old Mac).

A TCPdump on the Mac shows that no packets at all try to go out to the VPN server.

Is this a problem somehow related to the new M1 chip and associated intel emulation?

Big problem for me!

If this is your own server then check your server log for problems.

Otherwise, please contact the server admin.

Hello,

From our end we can simply state that OpenVPN Connect v3.2.5 build 2468 will work very well on the latest Macbook Pro M1. You will be offered to install Rosetta that makes the compatibility layer. In our testing, we have found no noticeable performance penalty from this, and all functionality works as expected.

However, it might be that something that the migration assistant did caused an unexpected issue, or that the config you have imported is for some reason not correct, or there is some other problem. Since we cannot exchange sensitive data on this public forum, I would suggest you contact OpenVPN Inc. at https://openvpn.net/support and submit a ticket in the appropriate Connect for macOS section and send us some logs and debug information via that secure channel so we can see if we can advise you further on this issue.

By the way, a future release of OpenVPN Connect for macOS will have a variety available specifically for the new processor type. But the current release works just fine.

Kind regards,
Johan

One of my users was seeing the same problem.

Upgrading to v3.2.5 build 2468 fixed things.

Hello i42,

Excellent - if your OpenVPN Access Server is offering you an older version, be sure to upgrade the software on your Access Server so that it can offer users the latest OpenVPN Connect software instead of serving up an older version stored on the Access Server. To upgrade your Access Server see here:
