OpenVPN Connect Android does connect to Synology NAS

Post by jarmar » Sun Dec 27, 2020 7:56 pm

I have OpenVPN server running and OpenVPN Connect on my cell phone. I am able to connect to the server and can ping all devices on my home network but only certain apps work over the VPN. I need to be able to access the various apps on my Synology NAS but am unable to do this when using OpenVPN Connect. I know the apps are working fine as I can access them from my cell phone when on my local WiFi. The apps that do work is SSH and VNC but not Remote Desktop or Chrome.

Any assistance in debugging the issue would be appreciated.

I think the problem has something to do with your firewall settings on the NAS. Do not close the ports to those applications. Test if the problem is still present when you temporarily turn off the firewall on the NAS completely.
Also make sure that you allow access to local LAN in the 'VPN server' application settings for OpenVPN.

The problem is probably more Synology related than OpenVPN related, so you can also post the problem on the Synology community forum.

Hello jarmar,

Joachim already answered pretty well, the only thing I have to add is that if certain protocols do work, but other protocols don't, then that means the VPN connection is working perfectly and the issue cannot possibly be with the VPN client or VPN server itself. The issue then must be a firewall as Joachim pointed out. Because as far as OpenVPN is concerned, you can make the basic conclusion that if SSH and VNC work, then the VPN is entirely working. If only some programs don't work then that's with those programs or with a firewall.

Kind regards,
Johan
