Is there a way to do this if you got root and access to iptables?

OpenVPN Connect does not support TAP mode at all (because Android does not expose such functionality).
Having root access still means that you need to find an OpenVPN app that implements TAP somehow, but I personally not aware of any.

Hello,
As I read you want to know you access tap connections with root.
If you talk about Open VPN connect. It does not support tap you can't connect to the network just one tap.
But as you say you have root access in your android so I would say it may be possible that you find an option of tap and connect
Thanks

There are several ways to connect to TAP servers from Android:
1. VPN Client Pro (requires paid subscripton, no ROOT needed);
2. Two apps by Friedrich Schäuffelhut: OpenVPN Installer / OpenVPN Settings (free, ROOT required).

On recent Android versions OpenVPN Installer no longer works, so you will have to install openvpn binary to the system by hand.
