OpenVPN and geolocation

Post by chudak » Wed Apr 11, 2018 4:56 pm

I am novice with OpenVPN :)

Installed OpenVPN in the Dream Host cloud and all looks good.
Question - how does OpenVPN knows geolocation? I assume from actual data center location but wanted to clarify details.

Thx

OpenVPN itself has nothing to do with geolocation. That's entirely in the sites or servers you're visiting. Could be some list of IP address blocks and countries, could be some online services, could be data plucked from a public registry. OpenVPN itself doesn't know shit about geolocation.

Maybe I was not clear, sorry.

Say I connect to VPN server and get it's IP, then that IP has actual geolocatoin attached to it. Say for example East US.
How does it get it and can it be configured ?

You may want to ask the datacenter where your server is located about that they might know that and may be able to help you with that.

The question is not how they know, the question is how OpenVPN knows and can or can not change it.

My expectation is that the answer is No - physical location of VPN server is what it is.
