HELP - Stupid question - but only if you don't know !!

I have a windows 2016 server installed at home on my own personal LAN that is running software that I would like someone at the bottom end of the country to access via a client software (bespoke software client that accesses the software on the server) and I want it to be via VPN.
I want to see how the software reacts in terms of times etc.. when being accessed from remote PC/Mac using client.
Simple enough it would seem, but not being network savvy, how on earth (in laymans terms) would I set this up and what would I need to do this?
