Admin rights for OpenVPN GUI

This is where we can discuss what we would like to see added or changed in OpenVPN.

Admin rights for OpenVPN GUI

Post by gjf » Mon Feb 06, 2017 4:21 pm

As for new "feature" of version 2.4.0.
I don't know about other windows version, but Win10 x64 does not allow to perform routing without admin rights.
So all actions to route all traffic through OpenVPN server are useless without "run as admin".
I believe there should be an option in interface to allow it.

Openvpn 2.4 uses the new Interactive service
so the user does not require Administrator privileges to use openvpn.

This is a bit out of date but gives the overall gist.

If you have installed 2.4 and the interactive service is running your user should be able to use openvpn.

You may need to add the user to a new Windows group called "Openvpn Administrators".
This group is only used to verify that the user is allowed to use openvpn interactive service,
it does not confer any administrative privileges to users in the group.

Hi,
Our non-admin users are still getting "requires elevation" prompts when trying to open OpenVPN Gui with the Admin Login/PW fields. Admin user logs on fine and everything works. Non-admin requires admin login. Interactive Service is running but doesn't seem to do the trick. Tried every trick on the internet and none have worked.

Do not see OpenVPN Administrators group anywhere. Created the group but unable to link it to the domain user profile since it is not listed. Only the domain admin user profile is listed, no matter who is logged on.

OpenVPN v2.4.3
Windows 10 Pro x64 (domain environment)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Openvpn 2.4 uses the new Interactive service
It's nice, but OpenVPN group:
1. Is not installed by default so I have to create it manually.
2. The current user who installed OpenVPN client is not added in this group - so I have to add him manually.

And yes - after that everything works as expected.
