Hello everyone, I tried to use the pre-built community binary for x64 Windows v2.3
When I try to use the openvpn gui it crashes on user accounts and on administrator accounts.

Faulting application name: openvpn-gui.exe, version: 2.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x50ebf636
Faulting module name: msvcrt.dll, version: 7.0.9200.16384, time stamp: 0x5010ac20

Faulting application start time: 0x01cdee1bec570dfc
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\bin\openvpn-gui.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\msvcrt.dll
Report Id: 395b4073-5a0f-11e2-be7b-441ea1d486cf
Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

I have tried uninstalling and resseting all tcp stack to factory default and re-install...
Same error...
I de-installed and went back to version 2.2.2 and it works again but seems to be 32bit client not x64?
Maybe that has something to do with.
Has anyone a successful build and operated without fault under Win7 or 8 x64?
Thank you for any assistance.

I'm having the exact same issue on Windows 7 64bit using version 2.3.

Installed the new version over 2.2.2 (it performed a remove before install), openvpn-gui.exe crashes as you describe when attempting to connect.
Performed a complete cleanup and reinstalled, same issue.
Performed a complete cleanup and installed the 32bit version, same issue

Performed a complete cleanup and rolled back to 2.2.2 and it's working fine again.

Is there something that needs to be cleaned up that we're missing?

Same problem here with one of our Windows 8 users. After installing OpenVPN 2.3 and successfully connecting to one of our servers using the GUI, the next day the program started crashing with the same error.

Rolling back to 2.2 is not an option for us as our passwords are more than 50 characters long.

OpenGUI v2 crash when invoke TAP driver.
The strange issue is that old GUI use the same tap driver without any problem !
I've try with i686 and x64 installer, but same result.
old v2.2.2 is working ....

I uninstalled 2.3, and a previously installed 2.2.2 x86 version, re-installed and then it worked. HTH.

Uninstall/reinstall was of no help for us. Rolling back to 2.2.2 is not an option as our passwords are too long for the old version.

Luckily, the command line connection does still work. For the time being I've created a batch file for our Windows 8 user to connect.

It seams many users, me included, have this exact same problem with openvpn-gui 2.0.
Old 32-bit openvpn-gui 1.0.3 works for me with x64 openvpn 2.3 so this is a temporary workaround.
Would be better if this bug could be fixed in current version.

Windows 8 has been a big hassle for me as of late. I keep running into random connectivity issues.

Same here when attempting the latest x64 client on Win8 x64.

A really nasty side-effect is that openvpn.exe can remain in memory, and when it is, you're still connected to your VPN! There's no tray app at that point, of course, so it's really subtle.

I found a solution for my installation but YMMV.

I noticed that 2.3 I005 was released today and it fixed an x64 crash. I installed this version, transferred my config files and... it still crashed in exactly the same way :(.

So I poked around a bit more and found I could get it working by changing the following setting:

Change OpenVPNGUI->Settings->Proxy setting
from:
o Use System Proxy Settings
to:
o Use OpenVPN Config-file Settings

After this I was able to connect properly and it seems, so far, to be working correctly.

Tony

Thanks for the heads-up about the new version, which I never would have noticed even if I had looked at the main download page (the big "released on 2013.01.08" on top is misleading).

The bug report:
https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/ticket/247

"OpenVPN Config-file Settings" is the default setting (I have no memory of setting it, in any case), so the update alone should work for most people who haven't set it the other way.

Interesting, perhaps my problem had similar symptoms but a different cause?
I also notice the fix was for 64bit only and my issue was failing on 32bit and 64bit.

I never altered this setting either but I have upgraded a few times (both 32 and 64bit). Perhaps at some point this setting either defaulted to the System setting or was randomly set.

In any event, I've been using it for a few days now and no futher issues have been encountered - yay!

Tony

EDIT: added 32/64 bit.

I ran into this same issue today, after having fully uninstalled an older 2.1 version and then installing 2.3
Glad I searched and found this quick fix, thanks :D
Seems like this ought to be fixed though at some point in the installer or the client itself --

Hi I have a same issueu with proxy settings on openvpn GUI 2.3.1 "openvpn gui has stopped working".
It took me a while but I know now how I can fix it, or wake it up!
normally @ the office I "Use System proxy settings" in the gui @ home I switch off the proxy in met IE (greyed out).
When using with this setting I get the error "openvpn gui has stopped working".
After changing openvpn GUI proxy settings to "Use open VPN settings" it works.
Swithing back to "Use System proxy settings" error is back!

Nothing about it in the release notes, but try 2.3.2, maybe it'll help.
