Change the OpenVPN GUI icon on the taskbar

vandreytrindade

It looks pretty much like the Windows 10 network icon.
Users (who are not from IT) complain a lot about that.

I have the same problem.
I think the OpenVPN icon itself is more intuitive.
My suggestion would be a white icon of the openvpn itself.

We had very often problems in Hotels and trains (especially WLAN in ICE trains of Deutsche Bahn)

we tested a lot with ports and others without result.
At the end we found out, tat in all cases OpenVPN Connection did not work properly because Package length was the Problem.
Provider of public WLAN did use own VPN technologes and so Package overhead got too long.

Adding "mssfix 1100" to config was the best solution. in almost all cases it worked then.
To have here a automatic recognition would be prefereable (to not slow down VPN in cases where it is not necessary).
To Add mmsfix 1100 with a comment into cofig file would be a good preliminary solution to give all users wich have this problem a good hint.

At the risk of thread necromancy, I recently did this for myself and wanted to share in case there's still any interest. I'm new here so I'm not sure if the developers frequent this forum, but I can create a pull request on GitHub if desired.

How To
Gist: OpenVPN-GUI Replace Windows System Tray Icons

TL;DR
Use a resource editor like Resource Hacker to modify your copy of openvpn-gui.exe. Icons and sample script provided in Gist (see above).

Great @CampinCarl !
I'll give it a try!

This chain is a couple of years old, but the topic is current again (or should be).
The current taskbar icon on Windows 10 is invisible if you're using the Light color scheme. The white outline when disconnected is especially hard to see--it's simply not there. Well, it IS there, in that you can click on what appears to be an empty space, and it does respond, but it's truly invisible.
The instructions that are given above sound great, but don't work with 3.2.2.--openvpn-gui.exe no longer exists.
Is there any way to change this icon?

Greetings.
Confirmed *working* for Windows 10.0.19042.685 (20H2 October 20, 2020 Update) on fresh install.

2021-05-03 using https://swupdate.openvpn.org/community/releases/OpenVPN-2.5.2-I601-amd64.msi (created 2021-04-21) as source.

Chocolatey msi2xml-2.2.1.957 (though https://msi2xml.sourceforge.io/ version 2.2.0.955 from 2007-09-27 also works).

msi2xml-2.2.1.957\msi2xml.exe -c out OpenVPN-2.5.2-I601-amd64.msi

Modified Icon Groups 91, 92 & 93 using Resource Hacker.

msi2xml-2.2.1.957\xml2msi.exe -m out\OpenVPN-2.5.2-I601-amd64.xml -o OpenVPN-2.5.2-I601-amd64-NewIcons.msi
