User credentials not accepted on open source openvpn gui

When I put in my username and password into the dialogue box asking me to do so when I try to connect to a country on my opensource openvpn gui using a netgear nighthawk x10 r9000 it won't accept them. I am totally inexperienced in these matters so am reaching out to a forum for help. I was never asked for a username and password when installing openvpn gui open source version. Thus I am confused. The VPN side of the router was the only reason I bought it and it certainly wasn't cheap. If someone could help I would be eternally grateful.
