How to: COMMAND echo,needok,needstr

I have read the OpenVPN Management Interface Notes in this page "https://openvpn.net/index.php/open-sour ... rface.html".
And I noticed that there are three commands can send notifications from the server to the client.
COMMAND -- echo
COMMAND -- needok
COMMAND -- needstr
But I don't quite understand how to use it.
I just run these command in the server management interface,the client(openvpn GUI on Windows and Tunnelblick on mac) can't receive any message.
I'm confused with it and I think maybe I understand it wrong.
So anyone who knows about it could give some guidance. Or tell me is there any way to send notification to the end-user.
