openvpn status log update interval

OpenVPN 2.3.4 x86_64-pc-linux-gnu

By default, OpenVPN appears to update its status log every 10 seconds. This seems quite excessive to me for a rarely-used VPN server. I have changed STATUSREFRESH to 300 in /etc/default/openvpn and in /etc/init.d/openvpn and it still spawns with an update interval of 10. I even changed the server.conf to: status openvpn-log 300 but no change.

What am I missing?
