How to set up openvpn on debian 8

Post by andrei32 » Thu Nov 17, 2016 11:21 am

Hello everyone.

I have watched the Hak5 tutorial on youtube and would like to install openvpn by using commands on the terminal.
This is partly because I don't really know how to use access point.

However, I have a few questions as I am completely new to this.
I know how a vpn operates.
But if I install openvpn onto an OS, when I boot the pc with wired broadband - does openvpn automatically get activated?
Or do I have to open a GUI on my desktop which will activate openvpn?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for the link.

I looked through it and there was a tutorial on creating a configuration.
I'm not a linux programmer but would still like to use open vpn.

I have found I can install openvpn Access Point which is user-friendly method of using openvpn.
However, the router need to be using OpenWrt distro.
My router does not use OpenWrt.

However, I can use the non-user friendly method of installing openvpn through the command line of a terminal on debian 8.
However, will this bypass the fact that my router doesn't use OpenWrt?

So you are using OpenVPN Community Edition not Openvpn Access Server ?

Yes, you're right.
Obviously simple-and-easy Openvpn Access Server is the way to go.
However, my crap router isn't OpenWrt - so Access Server is not possible.

Therefore I would be installing 'OpenVPN Community Edition'.
On debian this means I simply use the command

Code: Select all

apt-get install openvpn
I believe this means I'm installing OpenVPN Community Edition.

I don't want a paying edition yet because I haven't tried it yet.
I want to try it - trust it - and then pay.

For the moment, I want to know if the Hak5 tutorial on youtube about installing opevpn the hard way actually works https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcsQdtsCS1U
My question is: once you go through the tutorial, what happens next?
When I boot my pc what do I do?

The best solution is to read the official Howto.

Is this what you did to install openvpn or did someone do the installation for you?

The Hak5 tutorial is a video where someone guides you through the commands to input on your linux OS.
You don't need in-depth knowledge of internet or programming.
The openvpn HOWTO does require in-depth knowledge of programming.

Is there someone who has installed openvpn onto a linux OS via the command line?

We do not review 3rd party tutorials , follow them at your own risk and report problems to the author.

OpenVPN requires absolutely Zero knowledge of Programming. It does require that you are familiar with your computer operating system and some basic networking principles. If you do not have these prerequisites then google will help.

You are half way there .. now read the HOWTO.

If you are not prepared to read and follow the help provided then you have two options:
  • Pay somebody to do it for you (I am available).
  • Use some other product that does it all for you.
