Safari/Chrome disconnecting VPN

I'm a relatively inexperienced user, so apologies in advance for any misuse of terminology, or lack of understanding of the app.

I've imported my StrongVPN profile successfully and am able to connect just fine. However, when I attempt to access any website in Safari or Chrome for iOS, the browser hangs, then the VPN appears to disconnect (the icon disappears from the header bar), the page loads, and the VPN connects again. I'm not using any other proxies or advanced settings at all.

The purpose of using this VPN (in addition to security) is to use a static IP address for the purposes of testing a web application in mobile Safari or Chrome. When I go to http://whatismyip.com/ in Safari or Chrome, the VPN will disconnect and my regular router IP will display.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.
