OpenVPN Windows Flavors and Slow Connections (probable bug)

Post by cedricmc » Fri Oct 09, 2015 2:12 pm

Hi there,

I would like to know what are exactly the flavors of the Windows' installers:

openvpn-install-2.x.y-Iw0b-arch.exe

It is clear to me that 'arch' is the architecture, but not so 'w' and 'b'. I guess 'b' is some build of the 2.x.y version and, at the beginning, I thought 'w=0' was for WinXP and 'w=6' for WinVista and later, but now I am not so sure. I ask this because I ran into a problem. When I installed 'openvpn-install-2.3.1-I001-x86_64.exe' (there was no 'w=6' back then), everything worked smooth. But when I updated to 'openvpn-install-2.3.6-I601-x86_64.exe', note 'w=6' here (as suggested by the web), the connection went from 2MB/s to merely 60KB/s. I had to downgrade to 'openvpn-install-2.3.1-I001-x86_64.exe' ('w=0'), even after trying 'openvpn-install-2.3.y-I601-x86_64.exe', 'y=4,5,6,7,8' (always 'w=6'). But the other day, I tried 'openvpn-install-2.3.8-I001-x86_64.exe', note 'w=0' here, and it worked flawlessly.

Summing up, I have Windows 7 64 and, contrary to what it is supposed, 'openvpn-install-2.3.8-I001-x86_64.exe' works perfectly while 'openvpn-install-2.3.8-I601-x86_64.exe' works extremely slowly.

Any comment? Cheers!

Is bundled with NDIS-5 Driver.

Some problems have been reported from time to time with the NDIS-6 Driver but not for some time.

Here is the main TAP docs:

From what you say and my own experience, in

Code: Select all

openvpn-install-2.x.y-Iw0b-arch.exe
'w=0,6' has nothing to do with WinXP/7/8/10 and, therefore, the site's suggestion is not such.

All the Installers on this page:
https://openvpn.net/index.php/download/ ... loads.html

are for windows ..

However, as you have posted in Access-Server Forum, perhaps you are confusing versions ?
