Low VPN Speeds

Post by fidesachates » Sat May 06, 2017 10:23 pm

Hi,

I'm requesting for some help with my open vpn setup. I used https://github.com/jlund/streisand to set up an openvpn server on an aws instance on a t2.micro instance. I have a pfsense router that has an openvpn client to connect to the server.

All the routing works and I can access everything I expect. My problem is that the speed is more of a degrade than I expected. My speeds without the vpn is 100/100, but when the vpn is connected, I get 50-60/90. The upload speed is acceptable, but I'm confused why the download is degraded by 50%.
  • * I'm using tcp and aes-256 encryption.
    * I checked the cpu on both client and server during the speed tests and they never go above 10% so it's not a problem with the encryption.
    * Server is running version 2.4.1 and client is 2.3.14
Can anyone help or point me in the right direction?

I can't edit the previous post, but the speeds are actually more varying on vpn for download. They are 30-60 Mbps.
