New to VPN's Need help.

Post by protaganist » Thu Jan 12, 2017 6:16 pm

Hello everyone, I am completely new to setting up or using vpn's. For the past 4 hours I have been trying to do just 1 thing and 1 thing only... to get my ip to change when I Google "My IP". I have dl'ed and installed OpenVPN client for windows, and have dl'ed server configs from VPNBook. openvpn will connect and gives me the lock icon and green background on the system tray icon, but when ever I check my ip on google after that its still the same. Always have wanted to learn about VPN's and all, but I can not make heads or tails of this. I tried bridging my Ethernet connections which all that does is remove ALL my internet access. I am running openvpn in admin mode. Right now my only goal is to get the IP to change. I am on Windows 10, I have my AV disabled, along with Windows Defender and Windows firewall turned off. What am I missing here?! also I am running through a Arris n599 modem with ATT Uverse ISP.

Okay quick update, I tried to follow one tutorial saying to disable all the item that the vpn network uses except for IPV4 then bridging the connections, I have just re enabled ALL the items and tried again WITHOUT bridging, and now instead of no internet access it is saying its getting internet access. so I checked on google searching "My ip" again, and its still the same IP address, but when I went to http://www.iplocation.net its now saying that the ip location is in romania, and after disabling the vpn, and search "my ip" again, the public ip address is the same, but http://www.iplocation.net is giving my actual location. I have connected and disconnect multiple times, checking after each time, and the location HAS changed each time. but for some reason google still shows the old IP address on the search page, but only http://www.iplocation.net is showing the changes. also the ip that google shows is not the standard 000.000.0.0 style IP but a MUCH longer alphanumerical ip address... is this normal?
