TAP not working in Windows 7

Post by mbenson » Wed May 18, 2011 4:19 pm

I've looked through this and other forums, and found other solutions. But none of these worked. At one point, I actually had the TAP somewhere along the line, it stopped working. Here's the steps I took during the installation:

1. Downloaded openvpn-2.2.0-install
2. Set compatibility mode to Vista
3. Installed openvpn-2.2.0-install as Admin. Here's the installation output:

2. Installed WinPcap_4_1_2, also with compatibility mode set to Vista and installed as administrator.

Re: TAP not working in Windows 7

I used to use openvpn-2.1.1 and winpcap 4.1.1 with Windows XP, with no problems. I've recently been forced to upgrade to Windows 7. I only used the TAP before, in support of another program I have to use for work. When I started the other program, the TAP would automatically pop up in my task tray. Now, I don't see anything pop up in the task tray when I start the program. Only errors that indicate it can't find the TAP. The installer said it installed the TAP, but I don't see the TAP in the interface list at "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center". All I see is my NIC and the virtual NICs for my VirtualBox and VMWare installations. I looked in the OpenVPN log at "C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenVPN\log", but it doesn't appear to be logging anything. My firewall is disabled, and I ensured that all rules were either allow or disabled. There are no rules currently in affect to reject any traffic. Can somebody at least point me in the right direction to troubleshoot this?

Nevermind. I did some more digging and found that, in all their infinite wisdom, Microsoft moved the network interfaces around. I found the TAP on another screen, and remembered part of the installation process had me rename the TAP. Once I renamed it, most everything worked fine. I still have another problem, but I think its due to my other program, not the TAP.
