What "access type" should show for NIC when OpenVPN is connected?

I'm running Windows 10 Creators Update and using OpenVPN 2.4.3. When looking at the information in "Network and Sharing Center" I see that both the NIC adapter and the TAP-Windows Adapter V9 shows Access type: Internet. Is this normal and correct? If I instead connect to the VPN provider using a PPTP connection only that connection shows Access type: Internet, while the NIC adapter shows Access type: No Internet access.

Should I not expect the same access type on the NIC adapter (i.e. "No Internet access") when connected to the VPN provider with OpenVPN?

If I run "netsh int ip show interfaces" I see that the OpenVPN adapter interface has metric = 3 and that the NIC adapter has metric = 25 (and Loopback interface has metric = 25).

I would really appreciate if someone could shed some light on this.

For your TAP Windows Adaptor v9 's

• if you setup openvpn to give you internet access over the VPN
  then it will show as Internet access
• if you setup openvpn to give you access to the remote LAN only over the VPN
  then it will show as No internet access

It depends on how you setup your network etc.

My concern is actually not about the access type of the TAP-Windows Adapter V9 but about my normal NIC adapter showing access type "Internet" at the same time as my TAP-Windows adapter does the same. That is when connected with OpenVPN client both adapters show access type "Internet".

You cannot connect to a remote VPN if your "normal NIC" does not have internet access ..

Yes that seems logical... But why does not my "normal" adapter show the same access type ("Internet") when I create a VPN connection via PPTP and connect through that? When I use VPN with PPTP the access type for the "normal" adapter shows "No Internet access"...
